Shields Conservatory & Kitchen
The Shields conservatory and kitchen are situated on the lower ground floor of Murlough Country House which is all on the same level from the car parking area making it accessible.
Our stunning south facing conservatory is the perfect spot to enjoy dining, amongst other things, at the really large fabulous antique Victorian dining table. There are 3 sets of double doors from the conservatory making it a pleasure to get outside. One set of doors open onto the side and front garden of Murlough Country House. One set opens onto the end patio. You’ll find a very large Weber BBQ with small bistro tables and chairs here. The last set of double doors open onto the main courtyard with a large outdoor dining table and chairs for guests.
The conservatory’s woodwork is adorned in beautiful Farrow and Balls’ ‘Blue Gray’ and the walls in ‘Mizzle’. The amazing original quarry tiles have been preserved and restored. The soft lighting from the Jim Lawrence wall lights and Pooky shades on the table lamps make this space so intriguing and inviting. You’ll be full of exciting ideas and possibilities of how you will use this space during your stay.
The kitchen, everyone knows, is the place we all end up in-chatting, laughing and just being together. We know you’ll love our large farm house style kitchen. With plenty of space and all the modern conveniences and appliances available this will make cooking and entertaining a real pleasure. Little Greene Paint Company ‘Arras’ has been used on the lower cupboards providing contrast to the ‘Rolling Fog Light’ that’s on the walls and the opposing cupboards. This fabulous space is vibrant and energising- fully ready for a party!

Agar Snug
Agars’ Snug is one of three stunning reception rooms. Found on the lower ground floor of Murlough Country House next to the kitchen, this room extends the downstairs socialising space for guests.
Agars’ Snug is so very cosy with a lower ceiling and eye level Georgian windows streaming soft light into the room all day. The walls in Little GreenePaint Company ‘Lute’ create a gentle ambiance in the room. The beautiful reclaimed wooden floor, deep window sills, period features, lighting and furnishings in contrast are a real feast for the eyes.
Guests can truly relax here. There’s plenty of comfortable seating. Guests can watch tv or review pictures from the days adventures or continue the fun by taking part in some of the games available.
Finally that log burning stove, when lit, will add to the actual warmth you’ll feel in this intimate room that radiates so much character and fun!
Maitland Drawing Room
‘Maitland’ is our impressive formal drawing room found on the ground floor of Murlough Country House. It is off the stunning main entrance hall to Murlough Country House and is opposite ‘Downshire’, our eloquent high tech cinema room and lounge.
From the 1750s guests would have been received through the super sized front door to the main entrance hall of Murlough Country House and then shown into this room. It’s proportions are amazing with high ceilings and imposing tall Georgian windows creating a feeling of grandeur and wealth. The desired effect previous owners, like the Maitland family, were aiming for.
Our guests will feel that splendid grandeur.The period colours from the Paint & Paper Library ‘Canvas V’, above the picture rail, and ‘Canvas II’, below the picture rail, creates a striking back drop for the up cycled luscious navy velvet curtains, left kindly by the previous owners.
The fireplace and log burning stove provide a focal point to this distinguished space and period features are striking. The handsome ceiling roses, stunning chandeliers and the extraordinary original wide floorboards that have been beautifully restored with all the marks of the past importantly, remaining intact. Vintage pieces like the stunning rug and reupholstered footstool add a modern edge and flashes of colour and texture. The marvellously reupholstered sumptuous seating ensures guests are sure to lounge and soak in that feeling of opulence.
Downshire Cinema Room
‘Downshire’ is our eloquent high tech cinema room and lounge situated on the ground floor of Murlough Country House. It is off the stunning main entrance hall to Murlough Country House opposite ‘Maitland’ our impressive formal drawing room.
‘Downshire’ has a state of the art 15 ft retractable screen, an amplifier, projector and all the associated tech equipment. The dumb waiter, in the hall, now houses the cinema management system. Guests can connect games consoles and laptops as well as streaming events, programmes, movies and digital television through the remote.
Designed to give our guests maximum versatility. Soft seating can be moved around to suit family and friends groups or it can be replaced with theatre or meeting style seating for our corporate clients.
‘Downshire’ was previously the grand dining room of the house. It has undergone an incredible transformation into a luscious and dramatic ‘fifty shades of green’ cinema room. The walls are a deep deep green by Paint & Paper Library called ‘Sencha’. The sumptuous carpet is paired with a variety of green and stripy upholstered furniture and some beautiful cushions in Christopher Farr’s La Foret fabric. Observe the Vanity Fair prints on the wall and the two hand-painted lampshades. Find amusement in the ‘leaning door frames’ and try to work out why the cabinet has different sized legs. All the drama and intrigue will makes this room a real blockbuster with guests.
